There’s no doubt that career development is something that is important to everyone. We all have a reason why we chose the career path we’re on – whether it’s because we’re good at it or because we’re passionate about it, or both! Regardless of what drove us to pursue the career path we’re on, it would be safe to assume that we want to have career development.

One of the main things to keep in mind as you’re on your journey is that accomplishment is driven by purpose. In other words, it’s important to know your purpose so you can push yourself to grow in your career. But also consider that there is a difference between purpose and ambition.

Did you know a study showed that only 12 percent of women said they’ve had CEO aspirations for a long time1? On the other hand, the same study showed that two thirds of women CEOs said the idea didn’t occur to them until someone else told them so.

Another good practice that can help you grow in your career is to take Profit and Loss role opportunities. Once you’ve built your foundation of expertise within the industry and developed your credibility, P&L roles will present the opportunity to see another important aspect of the industry.

The essence of these ideas is that if someone sees that potential in you, believe them! So, when your current boss or manager says they see potential for growth in you, ask them how you can learn and grow. It can make all the difference. With that being said, if you also see growth opportunities in your colleagues, do the same. Offer advice and guidance to them, because somewhere along your journey, it’s likely that some was also offered to you.
